A Wedding Day Surrounded by Nature

Some wedding days are defined by a packed schedule. Others give you room to slow down and pay attention to the people, the setting and the little moments happening around you.

Joseph and Lydia’s boda at Smith Farm Gardens in Connecticut felt like the second kind.

From the first photographs of the morning to their portraits around the property, the day had a relaxed, intimate character that allowed me to focus on the details that often become the most meaningful photographs later.

As a fotógrafo profesional, I always want a wedding gallery to feel like more than a collection of posed images. I want it to show the atmosphere of the day and, most importantly, something recognizable about the couple.

With Joseph and Lydia, there was plenty to work with.

Getting Ready

I began with Lydia while she was getting ready.

The soft natural light inside the house at Smith Farm Gardens worked beautifully with the white of her dress and the bouquet. Rather than over-directing these photographs, I let the environment do most of the work.

There was something particularly quiet about the moment when Lydia sat with her bouquet, surrounded by the details of the morning.

Those are the photographs that can easily be missed when everyone is focused on getting ready, but they help establish the beginning of the story.

The First Look

Then came the first look.

I always enjoy this part of a wedding because there is a very simple idea behind it: two people who have spent hours preparing separately finally get to see each other.

For Joseph and Lydia, we used the gardens and surrounding property for the moment. The setting gave us beautiful greenery, open space and soft natural light without making the moment feel staged.

I photographed the reactions, but also stepped back and allowed them to have the moment for themselves.

That balance is important to me.

The photograph should preserve what happened without making the couple feel like they are performing for the camera.

A Photo Session Through the Gardens

After the first look, we moved into the Sesion de Fotos.

Smith Farm Gardens gave us a completely different kind of backdrop from a typical indoor wedding venue. The white architecture, gardens, stone walls and open landscape created several natural settings without having to travel from one location to another.

One of my favorite images from the session is the photograph of Joseph and Lydia standing together on the long gravel driveway, with the house behind them and the sunlight coming through the trees.

The image works because it doesn’t need much.

The property establishes the setting, the light creates the atmosphere, and Joseph and Lydia simply interact with each other.

That’s exactly the kind of portrait I like to create.

Including Their Dogs

And then there were two very important members of the family.

Joseph and Lydia included their dogs in their wedding photographs, and I couldn’t leave them out of the story.

Photographing pets during a wedding requires a little patience—and usually a little luck—but these images add something completely different to the gallery.

The photograph of the couple sitting together with their dogs on the porch is one of those images that feels less like a traditional wedding portrait and more like a photograph of their actual life.

For me, those are often the photographs that become especially valuable over time.

The Wedding Party

We also took time for photographs with the bridesmaids and groomsmen.

Instead of keeping every group photograph strictly formal, I wanted to use the character of the house and let the group interact with the space.

The result was a set of photographs that still documents everyone who was part of the day, while allowing the personalities of the group to come through.

These photographs matter because a wedding isn’t only about the couple. It’s also about the people who stood beside them.

What I Took Away From Joseph & Lydia’s Wedding

There isn’t a ceremony or reception section in this particular story because the photographs I captured for this gallery focus on the preparation, first look, portraits and wedding party.

And honestly, that’s one of the things I like about wedding photography.

Not every wedding story has to follow exactly the same structure.

For Joseph and Lydia, the story we captured was about the anticipation of the day, their first moments together, their connection with their dogs, the beauty of Smith Farm Gardens and the people closest to them.

As a professional photographer, my goal is not simply to create technically good images. I want to recognize what makes each wedding different and photograph that.

For Joseph and Lydia, it was the combination of a beautiful Connecticut setting, a relaxed atmosphere and the personal details that made the day theirs.

Those are the things I wanted their photographs to remember.
