Photography: Surprise Marriage Proposal & Couple Photo Session
One Question, One Answer, and a Memory to Last a Lifetime
Some photography sessions are about celebrating a special occasion. Others are about documenting the exact moment when someone’s life takes a new direction.
Adam Ciupak and Angela DeSousa’s engagement was one of those occasions.
On November 2, 2026, I had the pleasure of photographing a very special moment at Grand Bahia Principe La Romana, Dominican Republic. Adam had chosen this beautiful tropical setting to ask Angela a question that would turn an ordinary vacation moment into an unforgettable memory.
As a photographer, I always find proposals particularly exciting because there is only one opportunity to capture that genuine reaction. Nothing can be repeated, and that is precisely what makes documenting these moments so rewarding.
The Moment Everything Changed
The beach provided a beautiful setting for Adam’s proposal. With calm water, soft sand, and palm trees stretching across the opposite shoreline, the location offered a peaceful atmosphere for such an important moment.
Angela stood by the water, dressed in white, enjoying the surroundings without knowing exactly what was about to happen.
Then came the moment.
Adam got down on one knee, holding the ring as he looked up at Angela. Her attention turned toward him, and suddenly the entire setting became secondary to what was happening between them.
This is one of my favorite types of photographs to capture. The composition matters, the lighting matters, but nothing is more important than the genuine emotion of the people in front of the camera.
I wanted to preserve not only the proposal itself but also the expressions and reactions that made this moment uniquely theirs.
From the Proposal to Their First Engagement Portraits
Once the excitement of the proposal settled, we had time to photograph Adam and Angela together.
I always enjoy this transition because couples often become more relaxed in front of the camera after experiencing such an emotional moment.
We started with the natural surroundings of the beach, using the open shoreline and soft light to create photographs that felt romantic without looking overly posed.
One of the images I particularly like shows Adam and Angela standing together against the water, with the sky opening up behind them.
Other photographs capture them walking hand in hand along the resort’s tropical pathways, surrounded by palm trees and lush greenery.
I wanted their engagement photo session in La Romana to feel like a continuation of the proposal rather than a completely separate photography experience.
My approach was simple: give them a little direction, find interesting compositions, and allow their natural interaction to take over.
A Sunset Worth Waiting For
As the afternoon moved toward evening, the sky began to change.
The final photographs from the session are among my favorites. The sunset created dramatic shades of orange and deep blue across the horizon, while the water reflected the remaining light of the day.
I decided to use this natural backdrop for a more cinematic portrait of Adam and Angela.
Standing together by the water, they became part of a much wider composition, with the colorful sky creating a beautiful contrast against their outfits.
This is one of the advantages of photographing couples in the Dominican Republic. The tropical landscape offers different photographic opportunities throughout the day, and sometimes the most memorable images happen when the light begins to disappear.
For me, these photographs are a reminder that a great photo session does not always require elaborate setups. Sometimes, choosing the right location and waiting for the right light makes all the difference.
Why Professional Photography Matters for a Marriage Proposal
A marriage proposal happens once. There are no second takes, no opportunities to repeat the reaction, and no way to recreate the same atmosphere afterward.
That is why working with a professional photographer can make such a difference when planning a surprise proposal.
Beyond taking beautiful photographs, the goal is to document the experience without taking attention away from the couple.
From the proposal itself to the portraits afterward, every photograph should contribute to the story.
For Adam and Angela, the beach, the tropical resort surroundings, and the dramatic sunset provided different settings that helped create a varied collection of memories.
And although this occasion was an engagement rather than a wedding, it represents the beginning of another exciting chapter: planning the future celebration.
Adam & Angela: The Beginning of a New Chapter
Looking through these photographs, what I appreciate most is the variety of moments they preserve.
There is the anticipation of the proposal, the surprise of the moment itself, the relaxed atmosphere of their walk through the resort, and finally the beautiful colors of the sunset.
Each photograph tells a slightly different part of the story.
Adam and Angela, thank you for allowing me to be part of such a meaningful occasion. It was a pleasure documenting your engagement and creating photographs that you can look back on for years to come.
And who knows? Perhaps the next time we meet, it will be for your wedding day!
