An Intimate Beach Wedding in La Romana
Some weddings are defined by a large production. Others are memorable precisely because everything has been stripped down to what really matters. Paul & Gina’s wedding in La Romana belonged to the second group.
Their ceremony at Grand Bahia Principe La Romana was intimate, relaxed and surrounded by the unmistakable Caribbean landscape of the Dominican Republic. There was no need for an elaborate setting—the ocean, the light, the palm trees and the people closest to them gave the day its character.
As a professional wedding photographer, smaller ceremonies like this require a slightly different approach. There are fewer distractions and fewer places to disappear with the camera. Every expression becomes more visible, so I concentrate on documenting the genuine interaction between the couple and their guests rather than trying to manufacture moments.
Paul & Gina exchanged their vows overlooking the Caribbean Sea in a simple seaside ceremony filled with smiles and laughter. That relaxed personality continued immediately afterward, when we photographed the newlyweds and the small group who had traveled with them. Some of my favorite photographs from the day came from these moments because they weren’t overly formal—they showed the personalities and affection within the group.
After the ceremony, we moved onto the beach for Paul & Gina’s wedding photo session. The white sand, turquoise water and long line of palm trees gave us a setting that could only belong to the Caribbean. Rather than competing with that scenery, I kept the portraits simple and allowed the landscape to become part of their story.
One of the things I especially enjoyed was how naturally Paul & Gina fit into the environment. Barefoot on the sand, dressed in light colors and without the formality of a traditional ballroom wedding, the photographs have the same relaxed feeling that the celebration itself had.
We also used the resort’s wooden pier for additional portraits. Moving away from the beach and out over the water changed the perspective completely, giving us another way to incorporate La Romana into their photographs without losing the intimacy of the session.
For me, photographing a destination wedding in the Dominican Republic is not simply about putting a couple in front of a beautiful tropical background. The location should help tell the story, but the people still have to remain at the center of every photograph. Paul & Gina’s celebration was a perfect example of that balance: a small ceremony, the people they wanted beside them, and a Caribbean setting that became a natural part of their memories.
